Surgery for severe ED patients

Erectile dysfunction can be conveniently treated with pills. However, there are patients who do not react to PDE-5 inhibitors and this creates serious problems for them. But that does not mean that there is no more solutions. The doctors usually appoint surgery after all other methods had been tried. For instance, such surgery is performed for 20,000 patients in the USA. One of the solutions is a penile implant. The medics say that 90% of patients are glad with the ultimate result.

Such implants have been used for thirty years already in the medicine and the specialists try to enhance this technology. Simultaneously, ED patients received a big choice of options such as injections, newer pills, pumps, suppositories and so on. Therefore, the surgery is chosen only after other means have been considered. The surgery is a good solution but it should be referred as the last chance of the patient.

Professor of urology Wayne Hellstrom also thinks so. He makes about 150 surgeries of this kind annually. He says that men should have such surgery only if they had radical prostatectomy, diabetes that tells badly on the condition of blood vessels and when erection can’t be obtained due to structural problems. He advises to try other methods first and only then resort to surgery.

Installation of penis implant

There are penis implants of two kinds: inflatable and non-inflatable.

In inflatable devices, a couple rods are filled with fluid that arrives from special reservoir, located beside bladder. It creates the erection. The male organ increases in size. The benefit of this method is that it resembles a natural one. The male organ can be inflated or deflated depending upon the need of the man.

In non-inflatable devices, the rod takes a shape to make an erection in a person. The man does it manually.

The devices have been considerably enhanced since they were invented. The rate of patients who are satisfied with this method reaches approximately 90-95%. The performance life of the implant continues for 10 years. In some cases, the devices can work to 25 years. If the device is used frequently, then it can require some repairs.

The risk of infection is among possible side effects of the implant. Though probability is not high (every 100th patients gets it), the patients should be warned about it. At present, new devices are equipped with antibacterial properties so the risk is even less.

The surgeons implant the devices via incision made under penis – at the place between the scrotum and penis. The pump of inflatable implants is inserted to one of the scrotums. At this, man should not worry about the sensation of the male organ and ejaculation.

Artery repair is not suitable for all

Artery repair is advised only for young people without serious health problems just because other patients will not benefit from this surgery. As the practice showed, artery repair is not effective in the long timeframe for them because the person develops problems with other arteries – those, which became the substitutes, and they become damaged then. It means that the same problems arise again. Such surgery is good for the cases when penis is damaged in some mechanical way (injury during the road accident, for instance).

Only highly qualified surgeon is able to make such surgeries, as they are very complicated. These surgeries also require excellent equipment. Wayne Hellstrom performs such work with a laparoscope that provides little incisions and, consequently, shorter recovery period for men. The professor adds that the surgery of this kind is not the best alternative for men, who develop artery problems because of diabetes or hypertension.

Surgery is a very serious step and requires comprehensive research and detailed discussion of diverse options before the decision is made.
